Pittwater is a stunning surprise bordering on the northern suburbs of Sydney.  It joins the Hawkesbury's spectacular entrance to Broken Bay, providing easy access to many more estuary, inshore and offshore options if desired. But Pittwater itself can turn on some stunning fishing when pelagics invade to feast on the clouds of baitfish that thrive in its sheltered bays.  Pittwater has a relatively shallow entrance, so generally has excellent water clarity - perfect for flyfishing.

Pittwater is endowed with deep channels, underwater structures including several wrecks, holes, and marinas where pelagics can rest between feeding forrays.  The shallow entrance, bays and rock points make excellent ambush points for the pelagics to ball up migrating baitfish schools, feeding furiously at times.

Late winter sees some good australian salmon action, particularly around the entrance.  As the water warms up the numbers of yellowtail kingfish swell to healthy proportions - by mid summer they are a popular fly target - but late summer through to autumn is the prime season.  From about February to April the baitfish reach their peak and the yellowtail kingfish are joined by bonito, frigate mackerel and sometimes spotted mackerel.  Cobia, amberjack, samson fish and longtail tuna are not unheard of when conditions are just right.

Some insane surface action can be encountered on the outgoing tide when the baitfish are forced away from their shelter on the banks.

Other common targets include the usual bread and butter species such as flathead, bream, and tailor.

Early starts are beneficial because this waterway gets very busy with all kinds of recreational boating.

Boat hire is available.

The best trailerboat ramp for Pittwater is at Bayview in the Rowland Reserve.
